Applications Engineer

Our client, a $100M division of a $500M company serving the medical device and life science sectors is currently expanding and hiring an Application Engineer!  The Applications Engineer will participate in a group that has a very direct impact on the company's future revenue and growth strategy.  Through the pre-sale process, the Applications Engineering group gathers customer requirements, determines the most creative value added solution and ultimately estimates the project for quoting purposes. Along with their sales counterparts, they will help manage customer expectation and lead the internal communication of the technical requirements to our engineering team. A strong mix of technical, communication and business skills are required. The Applications Engineering group provides technical support and systems design approaches to customers. 

This position is open to candidates from locations where US travel is convenient (Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Boston, Newark, etc) with the understanding that visits to Syracuse, NY would likely be required to meet with the Engineering team.

Applications Engineer Key Responsibilities:    
You will provide support to our customers as an applications engineer. This entails the ability to identify all technical issues of assigned accounts and insure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process. You will work as the bridge between our customers, our sales executives, and our internal engineering team. This role is an opportunity for an engineering professional to provide a broader business impact while still utilizing a technical skill set.
  • Be a trusted advisors to customers and technical experts in the field by identifying market trends in current and related technology and implementing the appropriate tactics to build these technical capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Product Management to identify new product and technology strategies to drive sales and partnership opportunities.
  • Collaborate with sales to develop product cost and engineering effort estimates for customer proposals.
  • Responsible for development and delivery of product demonstrations as well as representing the product to customers at field events such as face-to-face meetings, conferences, seminars, etc.
  • Provide technical support to customers, both on-site and in the office.
  • Create White Papers, Manuals and Technical documents as required.
  • Able to respond to functional and technical elements of RFIs/RFPs.
  • Requirement gathering for each customer project, including providing the customer with system design ideas to solve their application.
  • Identifying creative solutions to customers’ needs.
  • Convey customer requirements to Product Management teams internally and engage with senior management to identify product and sales strategies to win new projects.

Applications Engineer Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer or software engineering required
  • Minimum 3 years relevant technical and customer-facing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategies into specific objectives, goals and action plans
  • Ability to drive performance and consistently deliver on commitments
  • Strong competency with the entire suite of Microsoft products i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
  • Collaborative team player who can build and foster relationships cross-functionally
  • Product development experience- taking a product from the idea/feasibility stage all the way through release
  • Must be prepared for extensive travel, 40 – 60%. Travel area is mostly North America with the potential for some International travel
  • Familiarity with Engineering and Operations preferred:
    • Familiarity with BOM structures
    • ECO Proceduress
  • Experience in Electrical, board level, design a plus
  • Experience in optics a plus
