Position Description Summary:

To work as a company wide resource for energy modeling and building energy use studies, based in Garden Grove, CA.



Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create energy simulations utilizing approved simulation programs such as Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, IESVE, eQuest (DOE-2.2), Visual DOE (DOE-2.1E), EnergyPlus and/or EnergyPro. 
  • Utilize Excel to perform energy analysis on Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), evaluate the operation of existing building systems, compare utility rates and evaluate existing utility consumption.
  • Demonstrate compliance with energy consumption standards presented in ASHRAE 90.1.  Model the ASHRAE baseline building based on ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G and compare against new building designs to determine the energy performance of various design alternatives.
  • Generate the energy documentation required to support LEED, Energy Star, EPACT 2006 and EISA 2007 project submission. Act as energy lead in the LEED submission process.
  • Review and understand energy utility rates in order to accurately assign costs to energy consumption to correctly determine the energy costs of various design alternatives. 
  • Be able to compare energy tariffs and rate structures to determine the most cost effective utilities.
  • For new construction, support the design and construction of new building systems. As part of the design team, evaluate the energy efficiency of building systems to determine the most cost effective way to build energy efficient buildings. Provide performance specifications to the project team for all energy consuming systems.
  • For existing buildings, perform energy audits and energy assessments to energy consuming systems to evaluate system designs and identify energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Review and understand utility rebate programs. Assist in documentation required to acquire a rebate.
  • Prepare measurement and verification plans (M&V)
  • Calibrate energy models with M&V results and data.
  • Plan and conduct building energy analysis.
  • Provide leadership and management to project team personnel.
  • Successfully represent our company in a professional manner at project team meetings.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

A background in energy efficiency and/or HVAC industries (design and construction)
  • Ability to read and understand architectural and MEP drawings and specifications
  • Experience with computer modeling of building energy performance using Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, eQuest (DOE-2.2), Visual DOE (DOE-2.1E), EnergyPlus and/or EnergyPro and IESVE.
  • Ability to analyze and diagnose problems identified during energy audits and troubleshooting of HVAC systems for large commercial buildings including central CHW and HW plants and built up air handlers.
  • Ability to analyze multiple systems to determine baseline energy use compared to energy saving measures and/or experience analyzing field data and energy consumption information.
  • Thorough understanding of utility rates and billing tariffs
  • Experience with installation and commissioning of building HVAC systems, automation systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Control (DDC)
  • Good working knowledge of HVAC systems and components (old and new)
  • Experience with chillers, boilers, fans, pumps, motors, controls, compressors, and lighting systems to determine energy savings compared to baseline equipment and or building codes.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, writing and problem solving skills
  • Motivation and ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Education / Experience / Certifications:

B.S. required, Master or Doctoral Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferred with at least five years’ experience in energy efficiency and/or the HVAC industry.

LEED™ Accreditation and/or CEM from the Association of Energy Engineers is preferred.  Engineer In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is also preferred.

ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) Certification or Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) Certification is also preferred.

 

Physical Capabilities:

  • Ability to work at a computer terminal with mouse and keyboard for several hours per day.
  • Ability to visit job construction areas and climb stairs, maneuver in and around pipe work and air ducts and work safely in close proximity to construction materials and equipment.
