JOB SUMMARY

The Vehicle Controls Engineer will be a key member of the engineering team. This engineer will be responsible for the design and the development of the control system for all electric bus models. The candidate will be self-directed with a strong ability to support a wide variety of projects with limited resources. Assignments are broad in scope and highly complex requiring outstanding creativity, superior initiative, judgment, and leadership. This is a hands-on position.

  • Work closely with other team members and suppliers to design and develop an electronics control system that meets functional, cost, quality, and timing objectives
  • Firmware and software development for the vehicle’s operation
  • Manage CAN bus network traffic and validate message integrity
  • Organize control logics to ensure all components communicate with each other
  • Act as the central control system between all subsystems and the operator
  • Validate new designs and test systems
  • Continuous improvement of the communication protocol and security
  • Work closely with purchasing to ensure designs are released within lead times for parts procurement to meet bus production schedule
  • Work closely with production control to release major projects into the manufacturing process
  • Maintain current designs and seeks out opportunities to continuously improve current product
  • Document new designs and design modifications with appropriate drawings, BOM requests and project release paperwork
  • Perform complex troubleshooting with on-site production team or remote troubleshooting of buses with field service team
  • Maintain current knowledge of system offerings and emerging design technologies in the transit and heavy duty vehicle industry

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in the automotive segment, preferably within hybrid and/or electric vehicles 
• Body electronics and/or vehicle controls experience 
• Knowledge of vehicle controls such as doors, lighting, climate control and dash panels 
• Familiarity with diagnostic and programming tools from the transit, heavy duty vehicle or automotive industries 
• Experience with ladder logic programming
• J1939/CAN tools (CANalyzer, P-CAN, CANoe, etc.) and standards
• Problem resolutions processes such 8D, 5P etc
• FMEAs to identify and prevent potential failure modes in designs
• Self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work within diverse teams
• Experienced in systems engineering approaches to solving problems 
• Capable of creative/innovative design solutions 
• Draws concise logical conclusions based on data from experiments/testing
• Exhibits vision and foresight to test the extremes of a design and guide team members through well thought out, logical test regimes

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

• Diagnostic and programming tools from the transit and heavy duty vehicle industries (Cummins Insite, Allison Doc, Wabco Toolbox, VEPS, etc.)
• Ability to create flow charts and executable code for various vehicle functions
• Able to execute Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly activities
• Experience with vehicle electrical system troubleshooting, electrical test equipment/tools, automotive industry codes/standards such as SAE, NEC, NFPA, FMVSS, DOT, NHTSA, harness/schematic design and drawing tools to perform load analysis, power distribution and circuit protection analysis, and charging systems
• Strong verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate the ability to express technical concepts clearly and concisely
• Demonstrated flexibility when managing through competing projects and priorities
