Job Description

Waste Water Hazmat Operator 
Performs routine day-to-day activities to ensure safe, reliable and proper operation, maintenance and transportation of hazardous waste water at 3 plants to include but not limited to; Performs inspections and maintenance on hazardous waste water equipment; Transports hazardous materials from protected area to temporary storage; Performs inspection on universal waste locations, Transports universal waste to the laydown yard for shipment, Prepares NPDES samples and transports to lab for testing; Performs preventative maintenance on equipment; Documents activities to ensure compliance to state, federal and company regulations; and refers complex, abnormal or unusual issues to supervisor for further handling. 

Waste Water Hazmat Operator Responsibility:
Performs day-to-day waste water/hazardous waste activities to ensure safe, reliable, efficient and cost effective operations to include but not limited to: collects, labels and prepares for transport NPDES (national Pollution Discharge Elimination System) samples and distributes to the appropriate lab for handling; completes chain of custody documentation and returns completed forms to chemistry department; prepares documentation for DHEC (Department of Health and Environmental Control) to ensure compliance with state regulations; performs daily check of pH, Chlorine, ammonia and other chemicals and records results for chemistry analysis; monitors and inspects NPDES outfalls to meet station environmental discharge permit requirements and reports abnormalities to management for handling; monitors aerators and lift stations for proper operability; inspects and troubleshoots waste water ponds and package plants on a daily basis for leakage, containment, and other environmental and safety issues; documents audits, inspections and monitoring results and takes appropriate action to successfully resolve issues and deficiencies or notifies supervisor for further action. 

Preventative Maintenance:

Performs preventative maintenance on equipment to include but not limited to: maintains proper logs of all preventative maintenance activities to ensure compliance to all state, federal and company regulations and requirements; performs daily routine inspection and cleans BAR screens located in waste water facilities; performs preventative maintenance on pumps and other BAR equipment; notifies supervisor of serious maintenance issues requiring more extensive repairs; performs preventative maintenance lubrication on designated equipment as set in the Plant Lubrication Manual; conducts routine checks of oil levels in various equipment and add oil to prevent equipment failure due to loss of lubrication.

Transportation:

Responsible for the safe, timely, reliable, and cost effective transportation of waste water/hazardous materials to include but not limited to: uses forklift to ship hazardous waste, used oils, and other substances from protected area to on-site temporary storage; transports any hazardous materials from plant to off-site storage or vendor for proper disposal; transports chemicals and supplies from on-site warehouse to lab; moves bagged up asbestos materials from protected area to on-site storage and arrange safe pick-up by vendor; inspection, maintain inventory, restocking of inventory, performing or scheduling of preventative maintenance, and maintaining activity logs of the Hazmat Trailer and uses gator to transport trailer to emergency location to ensure readiness for timely, reliable, efficient response to emergency situations. 



Waste Water Hazmat Operator Requirements
*MUST HAVE valid SC "B" biological waste water operator license 
*Completion of High School or equivalent;  
*3-5 years hazardous waste, wastewater treatment or related experience 
*Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills in person, in writing and by phone; must have strong knowledge of hazardous waste operations, maintenance and disposal; must be able to work independently and as a team; must maintain proper training to operate a forklift and gator; must maintains training requirements for SC Biological Waste Water Operator license; satellite accumulation training, asbestos awareness training, hazardous waste operator training, emergency response and department of transportation training and be able to demonstrate ability to effectively and safely operate equipment; must have strong computer knowledge and skills including Microsoft Office products
